Ayodhya’s Hospitality Boom: Demand Has Outpaced Hotel and BNB Supply

Ayodhya Hotel Demand Surpasses Available Rooms as Tourism Surges

The transformation of Ayodhya into one of India’s most visited religious destinations has created an unprecedented tourism boom. Since the consecration of the Ram Mandir, the city has witnessed record-breaking pilgrim arrivals, turning Ayodhya into a year-round tourism hub. However, while visitor numbers continue to soar, the supply of hotel rooms and homestay accommodations is struggling to keep pace.

According to recent tourism and industry reports, Ayodhya attracted more than 16 crore visitors in 2024, a dramatic increase from approximately 60 lakh visitors just four years earlier. The city’s popularity continues to rise as improved connectivity, a new international airport, upgraded railway infrastructure, and extensive road development make travel easier than ever.

The challenge facing Ayodhya today is not attracting tourists—it is accommodating them.

Industry studies indicate that hotel room inventory has increased from around 3,500–4,000 rooms in 2020 to more than 5,000 rooms in 2025. Yet this growth remains insufficient when compared with the surge in visitor demand. Experts estimate that Ayodhya will require between 8,500 and 12,500 branded hotel rooms by 2031 to adequately serve future tourist arrivals.

Homestays have emerged as an important part of the solution. From virtually no organized homestay inventory in 2021, Ayodhya now has more than 1,100 registered homestays. The Uttar Pradesh government has also promoted homestay development in surrounding villages to spread tourism benefits across the region. Despite this impressive growth, accommodation shortages are still common during weekends, festivals, and major religious events.

Recognizing the opportunity, leading hospitality brands are investing heavily in the city. Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), which operates the Taj brand, recently opened its first property in Ayodhya and has announced plans for multiple additional hotels in the city. Hospitality industry projections suggest that more than 1,200 rooms will be added by several major hotel groups as new projects become operational.

Several national and regional hotel chains, along with independent developers, are building properties across different segments—from luxury hotels and premium resorts to budget accommodations and pilgrim-focused stays. Earlier hospitality plans also included dozens of new hotels and homestays under public-private initiatives aimed at expanding the city’s accommodation capacity.

Yet even with these investments, demand continues to outstrip supply. The hospitality sector faces a race against time as visitor arrivals grow faster than room inventory. During peak pilgrimage seasons, many travelers are forced to book accommodations far in advance or stay in neighboring towns due to limited availability within Ayodhya itself.

The city’s economic future depends heavily on addressing this gap. More hotels, guest houses, serviced apartments, and professionally managed homestays are needed across every price segment. Additional accommodation capacity will not only improve the visitor experience but also generate employment, encourage private investment, and strengthen Ayodhya’s position as a global spiritual tourism destination.

Ayodhya has already demonstrated its ability to attract millions of visitors. The next phase of growth must focus on ensuring that every pilgrim and tourist can find comfortable, affordable, and high-quality accommodation. While hundreds of new rooms are under development, the reality remains clear: Ayodhya still needs many more hotels and homestays to meet the extraordinary demand generated by its historic resurgence.
